Cozy Carpet Time

My students need a new classroom carpet which is a well used and loved space several times each day for whole group, small group, partner and individual activities.

My Students

There are 25 students in my first grade class. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. First Grade is a great learning year in the foundation of school. There is so much that happens. It is amazing to watch a student start the year on an early reading level with a sentence or two on each page to reading chapter books at the end of the year. We celebrate as they come in being able to only write a few sentences on a given topic with guidance to being able to fill a page of writing with details on their own topic. We marvel at how deep their number sense grows from the first few weeks of school to having a deep understanding and automaticity with addition and subtraction. I work very hard in my classroom to build a classroom community. We have a morning meeting each day in which we discuss the day, events in their lives, things coming up at school, celebrations, and goals. This community feel helps to foster a love of learning. Building this relationship builds trust among all students with me and helps to make learning in all areas grow.

My Project

The carpet area in our classroom is well used and loved each day. We start our day with a Morning Meeting time on the carpet. We share news for the day, activities from the night before, celebrations, upcoming activities, goals for the day, etc. Throughout the day as a class, it is used as a meeting area for story time, calendar time, sharing, mini lessons, etc. When not being used as a whole class, students use it for small group, partner and individual activities such as games, reading, and sharing. At the end of the day, we meet here again to review our day and celebrate things that happened. As you can see, this is an important place in our classroom.
