I teach students with autism ranging from 9th-12th grade. My students have difficulties with communication, social situations, and managing their behaviors in their daily lives. My students require visual supports to manage their daily movements and manage their emotions through a reward token system. My students work with their peer mentors to build social skills on proper greetings and requesting things they need.
My main goal for my students with autism is to become well-rounded citizens and learn to communicate their wants and needs in the world.
I am requesting two couches that my students will allow them to interact and engage with their classmates and peer mentors. These couches are a focal point of our my classroom. My students begin and end their day on these couches. We begin each day with morning greetings and calendar. We end each day by asking each other questions about what they learned that day.
My students with autism participate in their reading groups, play interactive board games, socialize, and even relax on these couches.
By donating to this project you are providing my students a comfortable and fun place to learn with their peers.
These two couches will encourage my students a chance to model appropriate social skills and to be a typical teenager with their peers.
