Our elementary school is in an inner city district. It is still considered a Title 1 school and qualifies for and receives free breakfast and lunch for every student. My students come from a variety of social and economical backgrounds. They have struggles and successes throughout the day. Our classroom is comprised of regular and special education students as well as talented and gifted students. The students all have one thing in common; they all want to succeed in fourth grade and are looking for the stability of a routine oriented classroom. My students want and need a space to become independent learners.
Being fortunate enough to have a new carpet and comfy chairs in the classroom will give my students the option they need to stretch out and learn comfortably, together or alone. My students need an area rug and comfortable chairs to support their daily learning. A comfortable rug promotes learning by enabling large or small group collaboration, and partner or independent work. Comfy chairs will give students a cozy place to curl up with a book or math problem, or a place to unwind from an emotional situation or a momentary setback. In addition the chairs will be a great reward for a job well done.
