Help me give my students materials to create their own unique place in our classroom to calm down, regulate emotions, take brain breaks, and promote their creativity with tools and resources to support them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Earlier this year, I created a calming corner in my classroom which has been an amazing success. My students know they use the corner to regulate their emotions and can calm down and then rejoin the class. I would now like to extend this area to include more than just a corner. I would like to give a bigger area for my students where they can read growth mindset books in a comfortable chair, have a little bit more privacy, and use the fidget toys to help manage their emotions.
When students are able to manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively, they’re better able to focus and learn.
As the students enter the cozy area, they will be able to look at books that express different emotions and engage in calming techniques such as drawing a picture with paper as well as with the doodle boards, squeezing a ball, and using our sensory and fidget toys. This will allow students to independently engage in activities that will help them positively regulate their emotions. The new area will give the students a little more privacy to calm down, with calming colors, a comfortable chair, more growth mindset books, and a calming rug.
