My Students

As research has shown, creating sensory art is beneficial for stress relief and helping students process difficult emotions. The impact of the ongoing pandemic has been detrimental on our student's mental health. Furthermore, research has also shown that economically disadvantaged populations, such as ours, have been hit hardest by the pandemic, and this impact is demonstrated in our daily life at school. Underlying trauma with our at-risk kiddos is demonstrated with difficult behaviors and difficulty dealing with negative emotions. Students are triggered more easily and can have a difficult time calming down. However, our students are bright, creative, and thrive when doing hands-on learning. Art is a wonderful creative outlet for them! I want to provide them with smocks that are Covid safe (can be sanitized) and will protect their clothes. Many families are on a limited budget, so ruining their clothes in art class can become a major economic disadvantage for a family. We have about 1/3 students that are Black, 1/3 Hispanic, and 1/3 White and are a Title I school.

My Project

As research shows, sensory art is extremely beneficial for students dealing with trauma. With the ongoing pandemic, our students are thriving in art class where I use a range of mediums to help with sensory stimulation. Painting, paper mache, and clay are some of our favorites! However, most of our students come from disadvantaged households and ruining their clothes in art class can be a really big deal for families struggling financially. Please help me provide COVID safe aprons that I can clean between classes so we can keep creating our messy, yet soothing artwork!
