Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students consist of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, many of whom lack the vocabulary and strategic skills needed to access text and become successful students and citizens of the world.

All of my classes consist of students whose reading levels range from below sixth-grade level to above ninth.

Just as each student's abilities differ, their love of reading and the types of texts they enjoy differ as well. Our school houses a large ELL/ESL population. as well as an autistic spectrum disorder program, and many of the students in those programs are also in my class.

Our school is an inviting community of parents and teachers who strive to provide students with opportunities to showcase their artistic, musical, athletic, philanthropic, and academic talents throughout the year. We provide multiple opportunities to strengthen our students' ties to the school and community by engaging staff, students, and parents in events such as the Titan Challenge, Talent Show, and both Math and Literacy Nights.

My Project

Due to COVID and other issues, keeping physical books in the hands of students in a safe way has been difficult.

The scanner and sanitizing wand will allow students to clean, check out and return books (many of which are from previous DonorsChoose projects) in a safe way that will prevent COVID, keep both students and books safe, and encourage focused reading.

These products, along with specific "Notice & Note" lessons will be paired up to encourage students to read independently, look for these reading signposts, and determine the theme or message of the text.
