My Students
I teach first grade in the inner city of one of Chicago's most challenging neighborhoods on the south side. I currently have twenty first graders and I was working with about twelve second graders in an after school program I developed.
Unfortunately, the majority of my class is not participating with our online activities for a variety of reasons.
Some of their parents are front line workers who are at work during the time I present live lessons. Some of my students do not have a technology device and/or access to the internet. My students who are not participating online are doing the packets created by myself and my school district. They all have pencils, but sharpening them is an issue. A few of them have crayons, scissors, and glue at home to use for online assignments/paper packets.
My Project
As I stated over half of my students do not participate with our online lessons. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic my students were immersed in weekly STEM challenges. During this difficult time, my students are still required to complete weekly projects at home with their families designated by my school district.
Unfortunately, several of my students do not have basic school supplies to complete the Design Challenges/projects at home.
A few of my parents have lost their jobs, so it has become difficult for them to get school supplies for their children. These basic school supplies will afford my students the opportunities to continue their creativity while at home.
