This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have been home since March 17. They have been working from their homes using their own devices or devices that I was able to loan them before they were let go. Currently, they are working with the materials they took home and materials that I photocopied and mailed to their homes. My seventh and eighth graders are typical. They are motivated by rewards, novel items and food!
My students are trying as best as they can to be as normal as possible given the circumstances.
The closure of our school does not help close the gap between low- and high-income students.
My Project
My students and I are engaging in teaching and learning, like many teachers are, using video platforms. They share our screens to demonstrate what they are doing. But I have found it very inconvenient to do a math problem using the keyboard when if they had a lapboard, markers, and erasers at their hand it would make the task much easier and quicker. My students will use the lapboards to complete math problems and show their work on the screen. You might say, paper can do the same job. But I must say that paper is not readily available in many of our homes.
COVID-19 has hit our community hard.
Many of my students have family and friends that have come down with the virus. My students need reasons to be motivated. The snacks have always worked in my classroom. I will be sending along with the lapboards, markers, and erasers, the other supplies (color pencils, sharpeners, etc.) a small supply of snacks as a reward for persevering the last four weeks.
Lastly, one student in particular has trouble with the wireless internet in his home. He needs a long ethernet cable to be able to connect his computer to the modem. This will facilitate the problem he has with connectivity.
More than half of students from low‑income households
