Help me give my students care packages of school supplies.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Otero's classroom raised $397
This project is fully funded
My Students
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our school in Queens, NY has been shuttered and we have been distance learning since mid-March. My students were not able to come into the building to get their belongings and were left nervous and confused and had to ready themselves for distance learning with a lack of supplies and technology at home. Not only were our students left with the hurdle of not having notebooks, pencils, markers/crayons, books, and other basic supplies, they were also facing having to learn a brand new platform that they have had no experience with.
We were shut down with no warning, leaving on a Friday afternoon, not to return to our home away from home, for the remainder of the year.
Our students have made the best of the situation and have learned quickly how to navigate Google Classroom on technology that is foreign to them. We are in need of basic supplies to help our students maximize their learning in their new at-home classroom environments and adapt to this scary new situation.
My Project
I'm already thinking about a post-Coronavirus world where our kids are back in school after online learning for several months. I can't wait to get back in the classroom and maximize their chances for school success. However, while we are learning at home, one way to do this is to send my students care packages of school supplies to help them keep organized, which is a skill that will help them be successful in school and in life. The marble composition notebooks will be used to help us organize our new learning and keep track of our written thinking while learning digitally in all subject areas. During reading, students can use the notebooks to jot their new ideas and track the characters in their text. In writing, students will write narrative, informational and persuasive pieces in their writer's notebooks. During math, students will use these notebooks to show their work and problem solving skills. In Science, students will jot down the steps of the design and engineering process and the results of their latest experiment in our hydroponics lab. These notebooks will be essential in helping students to keep track of our at home learning while remaining organized. The colorful pencil pouches would be packed with pencils, highlighters, markers, and crayons that students could use to complete their work at home.
The Covid-19 virus has affected my students and their families in ways that are unimaginable.
Many of my student's families have not only lost their jobs and income, but have lost their homes as well, leaving them struggling to make ends meet and worried for what will come with each passing day.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
