Help me give my students the ability to express themselves through these materials! I usually provide these in my classroom - in quarantine students don't have these materials, or are families are focused on providing basic necessities.
Do you recall your middle school years? I didn't either, until I started teaching them ten years ago! I thought they would be easygoing and have outgrown immature childish things and not be quite as jaded as high-schoolers. Wrong! Well, some of those things were true. Instead, the children I found are a personality mixture of Bambi, Rambo, and a puppy who's had too much sugar, and occasionally thinks it's a coyote.
I'm honored to guide students of the future and experience the world through their eyes as they explore the vastness life offers, becoming acquainted and telling us who they are through art.
Though our current situation in quarantine is unprecedented and physically isolating, I have seen that nothing stops them from communicating and commiserating with each other as they process this plot twist. And just like 'regular' school, they will complain and moan about it, and then create some amazing work! I want to make that continue to happen for them even though I can't physically be there with them in the classroom.
My Project
As a full-time middle school art teacher, I have been able to get creative by adjusting my online assignments using materials some students have in their homes. So far we've made our own paint from soil, and made glue with oatmeal, rice and flour! But I have found that a great many of my students have been struggling to get their hands on basic supplies.
Some parents leave the house only for necessities - shopping for art supplies is not a priority now even if they can afford the materials.
Still other parents have let me know they are no longer working, and art supplies are not even a possibility, and finally the parents on the front line combating the pandemic keep them out of the home are struggling to keep safe - our communities needs all the help we can provide.
To address this challenge, I want to make an art kit available to all our art students to give them not just the ability to do their art class work, but to provide a creative outlet for them to communicate and process the overwhelming experience they are going through. We are requesting paper, markers paint, glue, pencils erasers and rulers.
Some students use my art class as a safe place to express themselves and process the experience of growing up - now that they don't have that place, I still want them to be able to do it.
Since we are not going to see our students until August (wow!!) 'summer slide' doesn't begin to describe the academic and intellectual disruption to their routines. I believe this project will help slow the 'summer free-fall', providing creative outlets that will help them to develop art as a way of processing and communicating what they experience, and they will take these materials to their next art class and pass on your generosity.
