This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our elementary school consists of about 450 students from kindergarten through 5th grade. Students attend school from 8 am to 3 pm every week day, which is longer than a typical school day. This extended schedule allows more instruction time for students, and more collaboration time for teachers. I am the teacher-librarian here. It is my privilege to teach every student every week. During class, we focus on literature appreciation, and information and media literacy. One of my most important functions is fostering a love of reading in our students.

Our school is considered a 90-90 school: at least 90% of our students come from a home where English is their second language, and at least 90% are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program.

Our population is also very transient. Each year, there are dozens of students who start mid-year, or leave before the end of the school year, because of their financial and housing situations. We also serve refugee families. These arriving and leaving students affect every classroom in the school. Helping to foster a love of reading will serve our population well.

My Project

As part of the team of teachers, and as the school librarian specifically, I strive each day in every class to help get students excited about reading. I encourage reading by promoting voting on Beehive books and participating in the Battle of the Books, by taking time to track or share our weekly reading, by posting pictures of readers around the school and online, and by hosting a self-serve Book Swap.

In addition to all this, and most importantly, the school library provides books that are mirrors of their own lives as well as windows out into the world.

Students know that the more they read, the better they will read, and the better they will do on ALL their school work. Becoming proficient readers is the single more important skill children can achieve to help break the poverty cycle. By becoming readers, they can become anything at all, pursue any passion they may possess. Kids are more motivated to practice reading when they find something that captures their imagination, and a newer and larger collection makes that more likely.

My small annual budget is mostly spent on books for the reading programs, and for replacing lost or damaged favorites. I cannot provide enough new and exciting books to my students without additional funding help. Please help me support my students with some of the best books from the last publishing season.
