My students need funding for transportation and partial registration costs to attend an anatomy seminar at the Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, CA.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The body is but a pair of pincers set over a bellows and a stew pan and the whole fixed upon stilts." ~Samuel Butler, Notebooks
This quote beautifully connects to the overarching theme of our anatomy class: Form Fits Function. This field trip physically illustrates this concept.
I teach in a colony of artists.
The Orange County School of the Arts is a public charter school that requires an application and multiple forms of audition. Not only are there academic requirements but also some form of performance specific to one of our thirteen artistic conservatories. These students are amazingly talented and also bright, diverse, tolerant, and empathetic. They have often been pushed to the margins of a traditional public school, but here they are accepted and celebrated by other artistic thinkers with high expectations for themselves and their community. They truly WANT to be here at this school and in my elective course; this makes a huge difference and leads to enormous amounts of effort and drive.
My Project
The most authentic experience for a human anatomy class is a field study of human cadavers. Cats, frogs, and fetal pigs are not truly comparable. Of course, basic comparisons can be made with these animals, but a physical experience with the complex biological machine that is the human form cannot be replicated. We are visual animals and seeing how all the organs fit like puzzle pieces into such a small space and function so effectively can only be truly appreciated in the first person. This is application of book knowledge in the most majestic form.
These students have the opportunity to hold the human heart in their hands which is a unique and indescribable experience for anyone, especially a high school student. My students need funding for transportation and partial registration costs to attend an anatomy seminar at the Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, CA. Diagnosing pathologies (e.g. cancerous lungs, heart disease, melanoma), witnessing human development and the effects of drugs on individual stages, and observing the intricacies of the human nervous system are just a few of the observational objectives.
NOTHING I can do in the classroom can compare to this field experience.
Student course critiques from a past year rave about this learning experience. It is definitely and clearly the most important learning day of the entire year in my anatomy class. It may reinforce an intended career path for some, and for others, it opens potential new options. Some have never had the experience of speaking to a medical professional in an open, mature, learning environment. It's a once in a lifetime experience.
