Courage, Culture, and Truth: Powerful Reads for Middle School Boys

Help me give my students class sets of Code Talker and Patron Saints of Nothing so they can explore identity, history, justice, and cultural heritage through powerful, diverse literature that challenges them to think deeply and connect personally.

My Project

Please help me give my students class sets of Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac and Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay to guide them through a semester of powerful, identity-focused reading and discussion.

These two novels give voice to underrepresented stories—stories of courage, injustice, heritage, and finding your place in the world:

In Code Talker, a young Navajo man becomes one of the unsung heroes of WWII by using his language as a secret code. This novel brings history to life and helps students understand resilience, discrimination, and cultural pride.

In Patron Saints of Nothing, a Filipino-American teen investigates his cousin’s death during the Philippine drug war. It’s a gripping modern story about truth, justice, and the complexity of identity.

Together, these books allow students to analyze the complexity of identity, culture, and belonging. They will investigate justice and truth through real-world lenses. The students will connect historical and modern-day challenges, as well as discuss issues that matter with empathy and depth.

We’ll explore each novel with Socratic discussions, Depth & Complexity icons, historical research connections, and creative writing responses. These books will not only challenge students academically but invite personal growth, ethical reflection, and deeper global understanding.

These books will empower my students to see themselves—and others, with greater clarity. Code Talker connects them to history and cultural strength; Patron Saints of Nothing brings modern-day justice and family roots into focus. For gifted boys, who are often underserved when it comes to books that speak to their identities, these titles provide meaning, challenge, and connection.

Having a full class set of each novel means that every student will be able to access these texts together, no one left waiting for a copy or reading piecemeal. They’ll read, annotate, and reflect side-by-side, with rich discussions guiding them into deeper understanding.
