Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title I school that serves low income families. It is a welcoming neighborhood school. As the nucleus of the neighborhood, it is used by various groups and is a meeting place for the community.
My eighth grade students are a diverse group.
I teach mainstream, English language learners, and special education students. All of my students are bright and inquisitive. They are always wanting to learn about the world, how to improve it, and their place in it.
My Project
My students will be doing a themed unit. The theme will be courage and empathy. The books for the unit will be about the Holocaust. I have included books at all levels and for all interest.
Students in middle school need lessons in courage and in empathy.
Students need to focus on developing empathy and standing up for others. It is sometimes difficult for them to speak up for what is right, when they are the only one doing so. These books demonstrate courage during adversity and the need for empathy.
As a teacher, I think it is crucial to plan collaboratively with other teachers. This unit will correspond with WWII in social studies. When students have cross-curricular instruction, the lessons automatically have greater depth.
