This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade at an inner city public school whose population consists of students from all ethnic groups. A great majority of my students live below the poverty level. Even so, they are funny, smart, and extremely resilient!

A great many of my students also come from homes where the primary language spoken is Spanish, so English quite often is their second language.

They're like little sponges who want to soak up every bit of learning they can. Often times they want to stay at school past 3:00 because they love it there so much!

My Project

Often times students come to first grade lacking number sense and knowledge of base 10 operations. They are only required to learn numbers up to 30 in kindergarten, so getting to 120 is always a huge learning jump for them!

These number boards will help my firsties with numeracy and counting up to 120 for those who need help in that area, and the boards have a flip side where no numbers are given, so they will challenge my kiddos who already can identify their numerals.

The boards are hands on- the students can match a number tile to its correct spot on the board. Plus, it's like a puzzle, and puzzles are always a big hit with kiddos in first grade.
