Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an inner city school in Los Angeles. Our students are from various backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. Many of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) with roots in Latin America. The neighborhood is currently gentrifying, so we are developing a diverse population with many types of needs.

We are a STEM Magnet that caters to unique and motivated students in Los Angeles.

Our children love to learn and constantly challenge us to meet their unique needs and ignite their passion for learning.

The school is 100 years old and we have multiple generations of students who have attended the school. Although the neighborhood is changing, many of the families remain the same.

My Project

In 2nd grade, students continue to develop their number sense by counting objects. They begin to explore numbers beyond 100 and reaching 1,000. Although counting to 1,000 can be quite easy for adults, it's a struggle for many of our youngsters.

My students need objects or manipulatives for counting so they may develop a strong sense of numbers.

We will use objects to count and build upon numbers. Students will group objects into numbers that are easy to count such as 10. Once they can easily count large amounts, I will introduce addition and subtraction. We need a variety of objects to count so that students' minds are engaged. They enjoy counting different types of objects.
