Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom revolves around developing oral language and functional living skills. Since we eat lunch early in the day, the students need healthy snacks in the afternoon. It also helps to develop oral language.
The school I work at is Title 1, with 98% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.
My students are all Special Needs ranging in age from 3 - 5. They have delayed oral language, Down's Syndrome, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy. They receive a wide range of services, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. They are very active and eager to learn. They work on requesting things they want and/or need, using adaptive communication, sign language, or oral communication depending on their individual needs. They are also working on functional skills; such as feeding themselves and potty training. We also incorporate academic skills across all levels and abilities. I have very high expectations and my students strive to meet the challenges. They are eager to learn and acquire new skills.
My Project
Because the school I work at is Title 1 with the majority of students receiving free or reduced meals, healthy snacks will provide will provide additional nourishment. A variety of different snacks will provide additional opportunities to request, as well as develop self-help skills of feeding themselves. They will also develop fine motor skills as they will be picking up snacks with their fingers. It will give them the opportunity to develop some independence.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom since I will be able to provide a healthy snack to students who are hungry during the day and after lunch.
It will improve their lives, as they will learn about healthy alternatives for snacks..
