Counters and Tens Frames Build Numeracy

My Students

Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.

Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.

My Project

In order to have a solid foundation in numeracy, students need to be able to count objects one at a time. The counters requested in this project will allow each student in class to have 100 counters to build their one-to-one correspondence as they touch and count the manipulatives. The tens frames will help students understand different ways to make 10, which is the building block for place value, addition, subtraction, and more difficult concepts.

These materials will give my students the opportunity to explore independently and at their own pace so they master these foundational concepts.

With this project, my students will be set up for success in becoming problem solvers.
