Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in Victoria, Texas. Victoria was hit by Hurricane Harvey in September of 2017. Our school had significant damage and renovations have recently been completed on our campus. In the year since the hurricane, our teachers have come together to make our school a family.
Our students have risen above the challenges of a city in clean-up mode, as many of their homes are still, over a year out, are in need of repairs, and are dedicated to learning.
We are a diverse campus with passionate teachers that serve students who are economically disadvantaged, at risk, special needs, and twenty-first-century learners. We are a Title I school where most of our students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch.
My Project
As pre-kindergarteners everything we do at school is new, fun, and exciting. My students are learning about numbers and the quantities they represent. They love to build their own skyscrapers and see how many blocks high they can build. My current classroom supply does not allow many students to be engaged in this type of exploration at a time.
With this set of Unifix cubes more of my students can work together to build "as high as the sky" and count all the blocks it takes to reach that high.
This set of cubes will allow for the play and exploration that leads to the mathematicians of tomorrow.
