Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very bright and energetic. They come from a variety of challenging home environments and often bring those challenges to school. I spend a lot of time redirecting behaviors and allowing students time to calm down before returning to class.
My office is not very warm or welcoming for the students.
I have actually had students to complain about the chairs being uncomfortable. Basically, I have metal chairs; a conference table; a bookcase, and two desks in my office.
My Project
My Co-counselor and I would like to create a space where the students feel safe and free to express themselves. It's also our goal that our office will be a place where students social and emotional needs are met.
A lot of our students struggle with low self-esteem and are not positively affirmed by the adults in their lives.
Therefore, in addition to providing a safe and warm space, we'd like to decorate the office with inspirational quotes in order to encourage and motivate the students. The stuffed animals will also help to provide comfort for the students. The students will be able to come into our office when they don't get enough sleep at home and take a short nap before returning to class.
I chose a sofa to help meet one of the basic needs of our students...sleep. Many of our students struggle all day because they did not get enough sleep or because they're on medication that makes them sleepy. The Soft Seats will be used as seating for the K-2 students when they come to the office for Small Group Guidance. Our floor is made of hard tile. I've had students to loose their balance and fall when they come to the office. I had to borrow a rug in order to help keep the kids from falling on the hard floor and hurting themselves. The stuffed animals will serve to help calm the students and they can also be used during counseling sessions. The storage ottoman will provide storage and additional seating. Finally, the motivational quotes and posters will help to foster an atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement.
