Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I began my career "counseling" kids when I was still attending high school. I have dedicated my life, career and education to working with underprivileged youth.
My last job working at juvenile hall inspired me to return to where many childrens' life paths begin: Kindergarten!
I now work in a K-3 school in East Palo Alto, California, where the vast majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. While being surrounded by affluent neighborhoods, our students are faced with severe poverty and thus are forced to cope with many of the typical strifes of a low economic community. Many of our young students deal with horrifying realities such as death, molestation and neglect, and yet they have limited coping skills to rely upon.
This is my first year working with this age group and I have found that my counseling "tool bag" for this age group is inadequate at this time. From the very beginning of the school year I recognized that I could not carry this load alone so I enlisted the help of three interns who have been wonderful in fulfilling the emotional needs of our students. Interns, unfortunately, do not have well equipped "tool kits", either, and they themselves need a great deal of guidance. Together we have created a wonderful counseling program involving many students and groups of students. We have created a "counseling" room, the first one in our school's history.
I was hoping that some generous citizens would help me better serve our children and future counselors by donating the funds for a counseling toolkit, which comes with workbooks containing activities for the kids to participate in on topics such as dealing with bullies, coping skills, and understanding feelings. For those who believe that a child dealing with extreme stress can not fulfill their academic potential, please help me help the children.
