This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a high-risk Title I school in an urban setting. We have 40% of our students living in temporary housing. Our school community is small but there is a real need to address the gaps they encounter because of the conditions they live in.
As we embark on a new school year with unprecedented concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept our city, we are in need of strategies that may help us address student's social-emotional and mental health needs at this time.
My Project
Virtual school counseling at my school will provide students with emotional check-in opportunities from the beginning of the school year so that we may validate students' feelings since the beginning of the pandemic. I will be introducing relaxation and coping strategies. A lot of the work of the school counseling team at Mosaic includes helping student strengthen self-regulation skills to regulate their own emotions. As with any type of skill, self-regulation skills need to be learned, practiced, and then practiced some more to achieve mastery. My counseling sessions will largely be focused on practicing the following skills with students including mindfulness, breathing exercises, physical exercises, active journaling, and yoga. I will guide and practice these skills with my students using the games and activities I have listed here during my remote counseling meetings with them.
