Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our students are an amazing group of kiddos. We have an exceptionally diverse school in Salisbury, North Carolina with the majority of our students coming from low-income families. Many of these students have endured childhood trauma including domestic violence, homelessness, community violence, divorce, and abuse. Although these traumas can impact their ability to learn, our students are resilient and committed to shining brightly at our school. Our students brighten our day by their strength, passion, ​and smiles. Many of our students consider our school their second home.

My Project

Help my students have books in the counseling classroom that are just as diverse as they are. Seeing positive images of someone that looks like you helps to develop a healthy self-image. The books will be used by my students during their time in the ACES (Academic, Career, Emotional/Social) class. The books selected represent my amazing group of Allstar students! The diversity within the books will help to build an understanding and respect for people of different cultures. The books will help promote respect and empathy for all people. Books have the power to encourage students while at the same time enlighten my students as well.
