Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Let's educate the whole child! Don't forget about mental health! If we educate the whole child, we will be able to see more gains in the classroom.

I work in an inner-city school that is filled with 520 enthusiastic, entertaining, creative, loving, artistic children. I have worked here for close to four years and we are in desperate need of a few updates to our counseling center. Over the years I have found that grief and loss as well as divorce are two of the most common issues my students are facing. I would like to be able to use more activities from Liana Lowenstein (She is a leading play therapy specialist). My students love to use various art supplies during their counseling sessions, but after four years our paints and play dough are drying up and we are left with just a few beads! Please help us refill our supply!

Our students are facing a number of challenges. Over 90% of our students come from low income homes. Many of our children could benefit from more intensive outside counseling, but are unable to get those services due to a lack of income. Therefore, I am left to work with families dealing with a huge range of problems. I have dealt with family members who have died in homicidal situations, children who have witnessed and experienced domestic abuse, children living with drug addicted parents, children whose parents are incarcerated...the list goes on. I am in need of more in-depth resources to better assist my families.

You will make it possible for my students to enjoy a wider range of therapy based activities. You will create more excitement in the counseling center because all kids love something new. The students will be thrilled when they see new tubs of play dough, beads, paint and puppets! I will be thrilled when I see new counseling activities being used to help my students overcome some of the challenges facing them at home. Your assistance will enable my children to reach an improved level of mental health which will lead to a better performance in the classroom.
