Counseling Carpet for Military Children

Help me give my students a comfortable, colorful carpet to relax on when they are spending time in the counseling center.

My Students

Our students live within the largest military housing Community in San Diego. Our students come from military bases at home and abroad, and they face unique challenges in that often one or both parents are deployed. It is said military children are like dandelions - they bloom anywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely.

Military children have learned from an early age that home is where their hearts are, that a good friend can be found in every corner of the world, and that education doesn’t only come from school.

To be so resilient and adaptable, our students need resources to support their emotional health. They not only depend on the services provided by counselors but the actual counseling center itself, as it represents a piece of home, welcoming them in and providing a steady sense of comfort when so much else is unknown.

My Project

In the counseling center, we spend a great amount of time on the floor, where we are grounded and equal. This is the place where we lay out our vulnerabilities and make connections. We work on building social emotional skills as well as resolving conflict. This is a wonderfully interactive time where the students share their thoughts and feelings, and I have the opportunity to facilitate their development.

This colorful, culturally sensitive carpet will give students a comfortable space to relax, share and grow.

It will provide a little slice of home, a place to land and rest in the midst of busy academic tasks and stressful social interactions.

A soft, new carpet will bring our students the feelings of comfort and care they need to know they are loved.
