Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school, located in Chicago's north side, has a 95% Hispanic population. 98% of our students are considered low-income. Despite this, they come to school with smiles on their faces, eager to learn something new.
My kindergarten students deserve the opportunity to receive the best education they can get in order to thrive throughout their life.
While our school provides as much as they possibly can in order to ensure students are successful, our district budget often limits what schools can provide.
My Project
My kindergarten students are constantly reminded of the importance of covering their mouth when they are sick, but germs are bound to be spread. We need cleaning supplies, such as disinfecting wipes and toilet bowl cleaner, to help us kill the pesky bacteria that cause cold and flu viruses. The markers and erasers will be given to each student to keep in their own pouch so we don't have to worry about germs being shared when supplies are. The adhesive velcro will allow us to hang items on our walls that cannot be hung with tape due to the texture of the cinder blocks. Finally, we need a speaker so that everyone is able to listen to audio played in class so we don't have to huddle together to hear what seems like a whisper on our current speakers.
While Chicago winters are known for their frigid temperatures and numerous snowfalls, we seldom think about the cold and flu that often come along with them.
Having individual supplies for students, as well as cleaning materials, would help keep germs out of our school and keep students in it. Since it is a well-known fact that attendance is a key factor in student success, I want to ensure that my students are in school as often as possible by taking preventative measures to avoid spreading diseases.
