Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach children with mild to moderate learning disabilities in a high-poverty school where all of our students receive free breakfast, healthy snacks, and lunch. Through no actions of their own, these kids have been dealt a hand that will make their school careers more challenging than for some children, in more ways than one.
The challenges that some of our students may face are a lack of resources, such as transportation, or other economic hardships that may result in their family becoming homeless.
Families in this situation may have to live with relatives or friends. Our students who find themselves in this situation are guaranteed attendance at our school, even being provided with bus fare so that they can make it to school daily, no matter where they are staying.
Our school is filled with hardworking, dedicated teachers and staff who meet the challenges of working with an at-risk population on a daily basis. We work very hard at creating a sense of community for our children, their parents, and of course the staff of our school. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!
My Project
Read Naturally is a motivating, non-fiction based reading program aligned with the Common Core standards. Students love the science and biography based stories in Read Naturally Live, the online version of the program. This project will help my students further develop their reading fluency by allowing them to not only listen to fluent reading, but also practice their own fluent reading.
There is something so beautiful in the sound of a literary work, fiction or nonfiction, read aloud.
Who doesn't love to listen to a read-aloud from the teacher? This will be an additional way for students to have this experience.
Students who need interventions will be able to work at their assigned reading level to develop phonics and word analysis skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing skills. Using technology, they are able to review the vocabulary, make predictions, record a one-minute "cold" reading, read along with the text, take a "final" one minute timed reading, complete complex levels of comprehension questions, and write a summary. As students work through each individualized level, they will be challenged with higher level stories. As the teacher, I will review the data, provide further strategies, one minute timed readings, and support. Students who are not working in small group with me at a particular moment will be able to still work on their reading in a real and engaging way on our DonorsChoose.org funded iPads.
I am also requesting covers for some of those iPads so that when students are working on their reading skills, the iPads will be protected. I don't want anything to interfere with their development and success in the fine art of reading!
