CougarCast: A Podcast to Rebuild School Culture After Covid

Help me give my students a way to record a podcast that seeks to rebuild--through interviews, storytelling, and pieces about important school activities and events--the school culture that has been marginalized by Covid.

My Students

For the last few years, all students have existed in an environment that has upended almost everything they knew to be true, right, good, and--perhaps most importantly--stable and familiar about their schools. Distance learning, while efficient in some ways, also did a lot to weaken students' social connections and school spirit. We need to work on rebuilding students' ties with their places of learning; in other words, we need to do things that boost school spirit and rebuild community. I believe that can be done through the spoken word and through storytelling. My students are special in that they have demonstrated the abilty to adapt to all the changes they've been through due to Covid. They've navigated bouncing between online, hybrid and in-person learning with a composure that many adults couldn't demonstrate. To be sure, Covid's biggest impact on learning has been to dissolve some of the traditions, customs, and cohesive social reality that makes school a place with a common culture that all can connect to. I believe a student-run podcast can help recreate nthis cohesiveness.

My Project

Having the ability to create a podcast that focuses on school/education/extracurricular/community stakeholder activities will, I believe, be a tool in helping rebuild the lost sense of community that many students and staff feel after years of a disruption of the status quo. Additionally, through careful choice in content, it could be a powerful social/emotional learning tool promoting several of the key competencies such as social awareness, relational skills, and responsible decision making. If a school doesn't have community...if it doesn't have a unifying theme...it will fall short when it comes to academics. All kinds of data support this. While I am not suggesting these things are not present at my school, I am suggesting that we have some work to do to rebuild our culture; furthermore, if students have access to hearing and creating that common voice, it will only aid in that recovery. The Zoom Podtrak P8, the AKG microphones, and the microphone cables will be used in my classroom to create student-generated podcasts covering a wide variety of issues central to the school and to the student body of Spanish Springs HS. Additionally, they can be used for creating content-centered recordings of songs, spoken word/poetry projects, essay readings and analysis, drama, and a host of other "alternative assessment" materials to get students with different learning styles into a mode of expression that allows them to show what they know. Standards addressed include Nevada ELA Content Standards SL 6-12: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas 4, 5, and 6.
