Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students at Sewell are Special Ed. students working in a Resource room. They are children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes. Regardless of the grade level, some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while others are learning to imitate and/recognize sounds.
In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.
We are part of a small community school where everybody is equal. I teach in small room, pulling students out of their mainstream classroom to provide one-on-one individual support. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to try to incorporate small chunks of their learning through out the day with their typical developing peers. The motto we have in this classroom is always to try your best, always respect others, build relationships, and staying with their group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day.
My Project
I teach kindergarten through fifth grade special needs students who would benefit greatly from having a couch and colorful cushions. My students not only have specific learning disabilities, some also have sensory problems, and others have behavioral issues. Therefore, having the opportunity to walk into the resource room would be the perfect place for them to express their feelings.
These resources would spark an interest in learning for my students based on their individualized education plans.
Helping students feel that learning is fun and the emoji cushions will allow them to express their feelings without a problem, which is a perfect way to build better learners versus reluctant students.
