Crafty kids need tools for creating clothing! I teach a costume design and construction course at a high-need alternative high school. My students, coming from a high-need area, can not all afford the supplies necessary in a studio course despite their great enthusiasm for the content. This is one way I can support them.
For the last two trimesters I have been teaching this course in theatrical costume design and construction. Students learn about the craft of design as well as develop basic skills in construction (hand sewing, machine sewing, crochet). This fall students decided they wanted to do a yarn unit in preparation for the winter weather. I want to support them and this unit has been very successful. I have found we never have enough hooks though! This grant would help the process of creation!
We need an assortment of metal crochet hooks (I have found metal ones are the best for learning on.) in a range of sizes. This will support students in their process of creation as well as helping them to explore different textures, stitches, and methods for crochet.
Many people say that the most valuable learning experiences are when we learn by doing. The process of learning to sew as well as other related craft have proven exceedingly valuable for students. Your support will make it possible for my students to have the experience of creating something with their hands and getting to say, "I made this!" A valuable experience, indeed.
