This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in an Elementary School that serves over 1100 students from PreK to 5th Grade and is in one of the largest districts in the nation.
Over 75% of our student population is on free and reduced lunch and come from very diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.
I teach second grade in a self-contained classroom. Students at this age are smart, creative, and very inquisitive. Some have attention dedeficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) but that does not stop them from learning. They love learning new things and feeling the sense of accomplishment when they have learned something new. They are also extremely strong and resilient. My students thrive and are excited to learn despite what trials they go through outside of our school walls. They inspire me every day to be the best teacher I can possibly be for them!
My Project
Students will get creative learning computer programs and special skills of how to make their own symbols and personalize their own signs for social distancing. They will also be able to customize their work area and supplies while engaged in hands-on activities. When you are learning you need ample opportunity to express your ideas in multiple formats, not just words.
Creativity is often an outlet to avoid academic frustration over language.
Whenever students in my classroom are asked to express their thoughts and ideas, especially about a text, I try to provided them with multiple methods including speaking, writing, and illustrating. The majority of our students are diverse learners and English language learners. They need different outlets of expression.
By helping to fund this project, you will be putting materials into children's hands and empowering them to create. This project will require students to utilize their creativity on a new level. Designing products for a purpose will also push my students to use both their mathematical and technological skills. Since most of the requested materials are reusable, this project will enable me to bring multiple hands-on learning opportunities to the children.
