My Project

In our Title I, multilingual special education Pre K classroom, many of our three and four year old students experience big feelings, sensory overwhelm, communication challenges, and difficulty understanding the emotions of others. Peer connection does not always come naturally. We are working intentionally to build a classroom community where every child feels safe, valued, and capable of caring for others.

This project will create a Compassion Center, a safe and nurturing space where students learn to see the world through another person’s eyes.

Through picture books, puppets, emotion dolls, and visual supports, children will practice recognizing facial expressions, body language, and simple feeling words such as happy, sad, mad, scared, and frustrated. They will role play real classroom situations and learn that compassion means noticing when someone is struggling and choosing a kind response.

This space will include weighted toys, weighted blankets, a sensory-supportive seating, emotion dolls, SEL books, puppets, and visual supports that help children recognize feelings and respond in meaningful ways. Students will practice offering a weighted blanket to a friend who is upset, inviting a peer to sit in the be when they look overwhelmed, or selecting a “Compassion Card” with words or visuals to show care. For many of our learners with limited language, these concrete tools make compassion visible, accessible, and actionable. Success will be measured through teacher observation of increased peer interactions, stronger use of feeling vocabulary, and students offering comfort without prompting. With these supports in place, our young learners will not only feel safe themselves, they will begin learning how to help others feel safe too.
