Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day in my class is a chance to make music with friends and a chance to make friends with music.
The students at our middle school are hard working, creative, compassionate and driven towards excellence.
The communities we serve are vibrant and diverse. Although many of our students face daily challenges, they do so with optimism, integrity and pride.
My Project
Clarinets and saxophones have corks that are used to snugly connect the various parts of the instrument. If these corks are not properly cared for they will dry up and crack. Students will put the cork grease, which comes in small tubes that look like lip balm, on the corks of their instruments. This is a critical maintenance skill for woodwind musicians.
When the corks on our instruments dry up and crack we are forced to send the instruments to the shop for repair.
Students do not have access to their instrument while it is being repaired, and it often takes several weeks. Students fall behind when they do not have access to an instrument, The cork grease will ensure that the corks on our clarinets and saxophones stay in good condition and that our young musicians have a working instrument to play!
