Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Language Arts teacher at a middle school in New York City. The population of my school and class is very diverse. Over 95% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households. This, however, doesn't slow us down. Not one bit.
I have an incredible group of resilient students who have been shuffled back and forth between in-person and at-home learning throughout this school year.
Having the "right books" to read is not usually an obstacle in my classroom, but in the times we are currently living in - with funding totally eliminated from public schools and many social issues coming to the forefront of our country - when it comes to books, I'm going to need some help stocking my library with some necessary items.
My Project
These books are extremely important. I have been teaching all of my students at home, on Zoom, for the past 4 months. During those times, I was able to use the Internet as a resource to provide reading materials for my students. Since we were all at home, I was able to find websites or videos to assign to my students. This all changed this week when we were informed that we will be returning to the building for "in-person" learning.
These books are essential to the success of my students.
When they return to the classroom for the first time in over 3 months, to say that there will be adjustments would be a tremendous understatement. The most difficult change for me, as a Language Arts teacher, deals with how my classes can use and share books. To put it simply, if they use a book, they need to keep it. Sharing, borrowing, and taking out and returning books is not allowed - for safety and health precautions. This is why I desperately need this proposal funded.
These books will be given to my in-person students, to use in class (and at home if we are forced to go back to remote learning) and for them to keep forever. Reading a book as a class is extremely important for my students. It allows students who struggle to collaborate and learn from their peers who are excelling. It unifies the class to be on the same page of the same novel at the same time. It sparks conversation and imagination both in and outside of the classroom. And students always love the culminating project and celebration. Completing a class novel really gives the students a sense of accomplishment... and that is what the books are needed for.
