I have a great bunch of students this year. They are hard workers, eager to please, and learning to love reading. However, this love of reading is not first nature to most of my seventh-grade learners. For most, there are so many things they'd rather be doing. They come into the seventh grade with the idea that reading is work and just another job to finish in the daily grind of school.
I have made it a professional goal of mine to make greater efforts to share my love of reading with students and get them hooked on good books.
Reading plays a substantial role in reading development and academic achievement, and I believe promoting intrinsic motivation should be given high priority in the curriculum.
My Project
As part of my goal for the year of acquiring more high interest, relevant books for my students, I'd like to purchase 10 hardcover copies of "The Giver." Every year we read the highly celebrated novel as part of our study of the dystopian genre. A big target students work toward is learning the structure of dystopian novels that they can come to rely on as they read other novels from this same genre, and "The Giver" provides an excellent display of dystopian elements for study.
Though I have 20 copies of this book already, they are falling apart after so much use.
I spend my days finding and taping pages back into the books, so a set of 10 hardcover books would hold up better through the years.
I believe having these new copies would help build some more excitement around the story as well, as students tend to get hung up on the condition of our current set. Truly though, some new, durable copies will simply allow us to keep reading an old favorite that seventh graders come to love year after year.
