"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
We are a Title I school in Oklahoma.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They have many cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnicity differences. However, they all are share one common characteristic...THEY ARE VERY ACTIVE KIDDOS! They like to move from activity to activity. We spend much of our day moving from the carpet to our desks and to the carpet and back to our desks!
My Project
My students need 3 wobble stools and 3 stability balls. When students sit on stability balls and wobble stools, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies centered on the balls and stools. And when the brain is stimulated, it's more focused on learning. Not only is the brain better suited to processing new information, young minds are also better able to concentrate on exams, note-taking, class discussions, and other aspects of classroom learning.
Students will be able to complete their work and stay on task all while being able to move!
So rather than squash a child's innate need for movement, ball chairs and wobble stools channel their physical energy in a positive way, allowing them to focus on their work more completely and reach their full potential as learners!
