This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students range in disabilities from mild to moderate disabilities such as Learning Disability, Developmental Delay, Speech Impairment, and Autism. Most of my students struggle with fine-motor skills. They have difficulty holding a pencil in the appropriate way, coloring in the lines, tracing, and cutting. These skills hold them back from progressing on academic skills such as writing.
Our school is located in a high poverty and high crime area, so there are a limited amount of resources.
Most of our students do not receive outside/private therapy, so services they receive at school are the only support they receive. Some of my students receive school-based Occupational Therapy to work on fine-motor skills, however this is only done for 15-20 minutes per week, which is not enough time to strengthen their fine motor-skills. These resources will allow students to practice their fine-motor skills on a more consistent basis.
My Project
These resources will help students improve their fine-motor skills which in turn will help them in all areas of school and will improve their quality of life.
Fine-motor skills predict future academic success and prevent low self-esteem, academic, and behavioral issues.
The Tweezer Tongs Color Sorting Kit will help students build fine motor control and hand-eye coordination. The tweezers will build the muscle control and coordination they need to begin writing. The Bead Sequencing Kit provides lots of visual reinforcement. Students will look at a pattern tile, then thread beads onto easy-grip dowels to copy the sequence. The Snap-Together Letter Blocks will help students build fine motor skills and master the alphabet as they connect the colorful letter cubes.
My students will truly benefit from these resources. They will gain skills necessary for academic success and for independent functioning skills. Thank you for supporting our project.
