Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is a fun, creative way to connect art with core STEM skills using simple materials: pony beads and paper chain strips. These specific items will make a difference in their learning because they instantly turn the abstract concept of the coordinate plane into a tangible, physical activity. Students will create pixel art by placing beads on a grid, which acts as a real-world x and y axis. To build their designs correctly, they must use ordered pairs (x, y) to map each bead’s location. This makes the idea of a grid immediately useful, teaching foundational spatial reasoning skills needed for everything from coding to reading maps.

Our goal is to foster a deeper understanding of geometry and data organization through creative play.

The activity also brings geometric concepts to life; once the art is complete, students can easily calculate the area by counting the total number of beads (pixels) and the perimeter by counting the beads around the outer edge. The paper chain strips, requiring a repetitive, systematic process, teach students about algorithms—the step-by-step instructions that form the basis of computer coding.

Your generous donation will help me give my students access to beads and paper strips for transforming abstract mathematical concepts into tangible, creative projects. What makes my students special is their incredible curiosity and ability to make connections between seemingly different subjects. They are eager to learn why things work, and this pixel art project gives them a "why" by showing them the math behind the digital images they see every day.
