Cooperative Learning at Its Finest

Help me give my students ways to learn cooperatively. I am also wanting to add an incentive program for great readers and mathematicians.

My Students

Over 80% of students at my school are considered at risk, with 90% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. For a large majority of them, English is their second language. Reading and writing in English is a challenge for many of them, but they show up to school ready to learn. They are internally motivated to do their best and be successful. Many of them go home and have to tackle adult tasks such as caring for younger siblings, cooking and other chores. A high percentage of them do not have an English Speaking parent to help with homework, creating an even bigger burden for them. Despite their struggles, they walk into school with a smile on their faces.

My Project

There is a lot of research in the education world that states if a child is not reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade, it is highly unlikely that they will ever be able to catch up. I want to change that for my students. I want to grow their love for reading and math by adding true cooperative learning in my classroom. As stated by Dr. Kagan, structures are simple, step-by-step instructional strategies. Most Kagan Structures are designed to increase student engagement and cooperation. For example, a simple Kagan Structure is a RallyRobin. Rather than calling on one student at a time, the teacher has all students interacting at once by saying, “Turn to your partner and do a RallyRobin.” During a RallyRobin, students repeatedly take turns, giving one answer each turn to create an oral list. Each student in the class gives several answers. For longer responses, the teacher might use a different structure, a Timed Pair Share. In a Timed Pair Share, each student, in turn, shares for a predetermined time, perhaps only a minute each.

Bringing cooperative learning into the classroom opens more opportunities for engagement in reading and math during the day.

The Kagan resources I am requesting will give specific tools for incorporating cooperative learning in both Reading and Math. Additionally, being able to add Math mentor texts in my classroom library will allow me to integrate reading across other content areas as well.

Much of our community lost everything during Hurricane Harvey and then 2 years later, many experienced flooding with Tropical Storm Imelda as well. Basic necessities are the priority, putting education sometimes at the bottom of the list. I would like to be able to provide some of that in my classroom.
