My Students
The students in my school come from many different backgrounds: from upper middle class families to very low socioeconomic status single parent households to multifamily/multi-generational households; my students have great potential with a few stumbling blocks ahead of them. Many of my students live in walking distance to the school. They are bright but have many economic factors against them. Some students are unable to afford basic supplies such as pencils, paper, and binders.
Even with the challenges that they face, they rise to the high expectations that we set for them.
Sometimes, they even surprise those of us who teach them every day.
My Project
The materials I am requesting for my classroom will be used to help students work together cooperatively to share responsibility for learning as well as to help me hold them accountable for their own learning.
Students learn well from their peers and the peers doing the teaching cement their own learning by sharing it with others.
The sticky chart paper will be used so that group members can all contribute in a meaningful way to a single product.
The colored copy paper will be used to help me and my students use class time more effectively by making differentiated activities in different colors so that at the end of the class, materials can be easily re-sorted in a timely fashion. The pencils will be loaned (with collateral such as a bookbag) to students who don't have their own. The collateral is helpful because I have found without it, my pencils don't return and there is a proverbial "hole in the bucket" of my loaner pencil cup.
More than half of students from low‑income households
