Our children come from the neighborhood in which our school is located. Many of the them walk or ride their bikes to school each morning. In any given year we have as many as 22 languages represented in our school community and over half of our children qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school mascot is Snortner the Dragon. We call our children Dragons and ask them to always be on FIRE by showing Focus, Integrity, Respect and Empathy. Our school culture strongly values collaborative learning and kindness to others. We are proud to call ourselves a "No Place for Hate" School.
The children in our preschool/kindergarten learning community are often experiencing their first year of school and we welcome them with love and experiential learning.
Many of our youngest learners also have special education needs since our preschools are integrated classrooms. Our children are curious and ready to learn.
My Project
Our preschool and kindergarten learning community has a shared common learning space that we call the Hive. In the Hive the children have the opportunity to learn through play together outside of the classroom. Some people have called our area a mini children's museum. This project will fund a collaborative center inside our Hive. We have centers such as a Makerspace, dramatic play, and puzzles. The teachers have identified a need for large motor experiences and additional cooperative/collaborative learning. The large hollow blocks and soft carpet will provide these opportunities for children.
Children learn so much through block building about physics and geometry, perseverance and creativity.
By providing the large blocks and defined space of the carpet children will also have the chance to build together and really get creative with materials that they don't have else where.
