My Students
My students come from many different countries. Some of them are English Language Learners. My students attend an inner-city school and most come from low-income homes. What unites my students is their love for learning. Unfortunately, most of my students do not have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic growth. But regardless of the challenges they face, my students are highly motivated learners.
My students love learning through exploration and play.
Even the children who are not proficient in English, feel successful when they are learning and interacting with others through play.
My Project
Many of my kindergarteners are growing up in low-income homes and don't have developmentally appropriate toys and materials. As a kindergarten teacher, I value and celebrate childhood by including playtime in a school day. Through play, youngsters develop language, problem-solving, social and physical skills. All those skills are essential for academic learning.
These hollow blocks will allow my budding engineers to construct settings for their play.
With imagination hard at work, they will be building fire trucks, restaurants, stores, playgrounds, etc. While building with blocks, children will develop abstract thinking, essential for understanding mathematical concepts. They will gain first-hand experience with the size and shape relationships and increase their understanding of the world around them.
Through the experience of building with hollow blocks, my kindergarteners (and especially the ones who are English Learners) will expand their expressive language as they talk about their ideas and designs. Through labeling and naming structures, block play will provide a basic foundation for language and literacy.
Building with hollow blocks will give my students an opportunity to enhance self-esteem through planning and working with other children and realize that there are no right or wrong ways to build and play.
