My Students
I am the sole school counselor at my public elementary school which serves preschool through grade 5. My 530 students range in age from 3 years old through 12 years old. My students have very diverse developmental, social, emotional, academic, and economic needs. One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing my students from all different walks of life support, love, and truly care for each other.
My students' diverse backgrounds make my school a wonderful place to work and also provides our kiddos with a rich education that extends beyond the textbooks.
My Project
I was tasked with providing teachers with resources to help students strengthen emotional self-regulation skills. Nearly 70% of my school counseling referrals are responsive services requests for students who need assistance managing their behavior and emotions.
The requested resources will be used to help students build their "cool" tools to better function with anxiety, stress, impulsivity and promote self-regulation skills.
The purpose is to help them regain behavioral control and not serve as a punishment. Students will benefit from these resources through small group and individual counseling formats. Through the use of mindfulness activities, body control and brain break tools such as the requested sensory items, and motivational interviewing, students whom I see on an individual basis will practice building their repertoire of "cool tools" - skills and habits that are beneficial for emotional self-regulation and success. Through the use of small group counseling focused in areas of social skills, behavior challenges, and academic achievement, my students will work collaboratively to build skills that help them function successfully in the classroom and in social settings.
By allowing students to practice these skills, we develop their emotional intelligence, strengthen relationships, and communicate to students that they belong in this community. We can empower students to take regulation into their own hands and limit time spent out of the classroom.
