This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our elementary school's annual field day includes a water station that includes a booth that illustrates the water cycle. While the rotating groups of students sit down to cool off, I am demonstrating science lessons that reinforce the different states of water and the importance of staying hydrated. Students will learn that we are made up mostly of water and how this non-renewable resource sustains the planet and us. The donated shaved ice machine will reinforce the different states of matter and also help with keeping our students hydrated during our annual June field day events. Last year, we had to encourage our students to drink water at the resting/science station. I suspect students will not need encouragement to enjoy snow cones. I am optimistic that the process of observing the shaved ice treat preparation and eating the frozen cones will serve as a hands-on reminder that temperature impacts our environment and our bodies. During the day, the water station will provide an educational resting spot for approximately 400 students in grades K through 5 before they move onto the next physically exerting station.
