Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

There are 50 ESL students from Africa, Asia, and Latin America in our metropolitan high school of 1500 students. I teach ESL to 25 students. Many of my students are on intermediate or advanced levels. Although they are able to communicate well, they are below grade level in reading skills. It is imperative that they strengthen existing reading skills and increase vocabulary. By reading children's literature, they will develop more of a feel for English. They will learn new words in context as well as absorb information. They will learn without studying and enjoy doing it. If what they read is meaningful to them, they will remember it and increase their English reading proficiency. I have selected a variety of high interest teen and young adult books for our ESL classroom library. These books will be available to 20 or more students for leisure reading. They include multicultural themes, teen issues, history, sports, humor, and suspense. There are books for boys and some for girls and some that appeal to both. I believe that these books will spark their interest and help them become better readers. I know they will appreciate your gift. Thank you.
