My Students
The wonderful students at my school all have special need with a range of disabilities, emotional disturbances, autism spectrum disorder, multiple disabilities, medically fragile and special learning disabilities. We are a K-8 title 1 school servicing families from the lowest economic households in city. The students all need support in their social interaction and it has been one of our missions to offer events that are connected to the school curriculum to enhance those experiences.
This year the students have been given more opportunities to participate in the events that are happening in the building and more of the students come to school when we have these events and are having so much fun and continue to ask for more opportunities to socialize and work with other students in the school.
In addition, parents are invited and this provides an opportunity for them to meet each other in a safe community setting.
My Project
It has been the schools goal to increase the amount of social events for students and parents. These events often involved foods which need to be refrigerated. It has been our initiative to have the students be in as much control of the events as possible. This means having an available refrigerator for them to keep the foods that we need. They will have access to the fridge and be responsible for taking care of the food and fridge which adds to both their daily education as well as their daily living skills. In addition this events allow the students to be directly involved in fundraising by selling little food items which they will benefit from during bigger events and performances.
We have a full performing arts team this year and now we have bigger productions that need more funding.
It will be wonderful to see their hard work pay off for bigger events!
