My Students

Our school is a Title I public school in Kailua-Kona Hawaii hat serves over 1,500 students, with over one third in ELL (EL) services and one fourth of the population receiving SPED services. While I service about 120-150 of those students over the school week in our inclusion classroom, the classroom I was given is half the normal classroom size (it is sectioned off as a continuation for a larger room next door) leaving me with 25-30 kids a class in a room designed for 16--an otherwise poorly ventilated, very hot, and uncomfortable room for students. On average, we see weather in the high 80's & mid to low 90's with little shade and lots of direct sun, adding to the stress of our close quarters.

Despite these challenges, my students still arrive to class each day with only the highest degree of respect and humility, never complaining about their discomfort and always sharing resources compassionately with their peers.

Through hard work, determination, and a willingness to be vulnerable, my Special Education and General Education students strive to succeed everyday.

My Project

Our students are attending a school set in the middle of an old lava field; directly in the sun, the campus is 50 full acres, and with little daily reprieve for shade or cooling. Our classes are scheduled to meet for 70+ minutes each day with 5 minute passing periods which means every student is spending a good portion of their day dealing with the heat of the sun and the rooms which have only windows. All buildings stand alone and use hurricane shutters as the only guide for what little wind we receive. Most of our water fountains have semi cool water, but even those are a walk away from the classroom meaning you need to choose water over being on time in some cases.

Despite these setbacks, my students always strive to put their best foot forward and commit to participating wholesomely in their learning; all the while, the students encourage others and help maintain a sense of connected community.

I have seen students buy cool drinks or fill water bottles for their friends. You can see any student ready to help fan their neighbor or desk buddy with a binder or book-- even if they aren't particularly close. And, above all, I see students who are susceptible to these harsher conditions that still strive to maintain their learning with attentiveness, skill, and respect. Our school promotes what we call the 3 R's (Relationships, Respect, and Responsibility)--the challenge for me, is making sure we as a school community extend the same courtesy to them.
