My Students

The Diablo Community Center is the only place on campus for students to slow down, relax, seek safety, rest, breathe, talk, and not be judged all at the same time.

As a result, our students often enter the door in fight or flight mode, highly agitated or in need of major emotional support.

Our students are among the most eager, vulnerable, sensitive and delicate students of the entire campus. Many of our students experience adversity and barriers to learning due to challenging home life situations. Our students typically gravitate to our school based health center for a sense a of community and safety during the madness of a typical school day. In a high school made up of roughly 1,500 students, there are few places of refugee and calm... However, this is what we hope to offer in the Diablo Community Center each day!

My Project

We are requesting kinetic sand, play dough, bubbles, coloring books, colored pencils, stress balls, and tea. For the past few years, using their own funds, our therapists have offered cool-down kits to our students in distress. Student's who enter our center are usually agitated and emotional. The great thing is that the items in the kits help students to regulate their emotions.

By simply coloring, blowing bubbles, squeezing a stress ball, rolling some play dough, molding kinetic sand, and drinking a cup of tea students become physically aware of their own self-regulation.

At our school based health center we encourage students to seek refugee and to use these simple techniques throughout their school day and life.

We want to make TEN kits for students to use when they come into our space. The creation of the kits will be the perfect touch in one of the only areas of the school intentionally designated to be a "safe place." Students who may not otherwise have the chance to get those emotions out will now be able to do so with our Cool Down Kits.

The Cool Down Kit will truly see a lot of use in our center!
