This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Living in the under-resourced South Central Los Angeles area comes with a lot of challenges. As a psychiatric social worker, I am honored that our scholars courageously share their stories with me that they've kept inside for various reasons. They share all the intimate details of the adversity they experienced and, for some, continue to go through.
Your donations will help create the "vibe" and soothing environment to help our scholars regulate their emotions on the Feeling Thermometer from an orange/red to a yellow/green.
Based on our scholars' feedback, we are looking into creating a space that taps into the different senses to help our scholars ground themselves.
Your generosity will go into sensory tools, emotion identification markers, and self-soothing idea cards for our scholars to cope when in crisis. The speaker will be used for guided meditation and soothing sounds to help calm the nervous system. The plush toys and feelings slider will be used to help our scholars identify their uncomfortable emotions. The self-calming cards will assist in expanding our student's coping strategies toolbox. The sensory tools (tilt and turn window, kinetic sand, color mix tubes and squeeze beads) will be used for grounding exercises when their fight or flight is activated. I welcome you to support our middle school scholars to create the space to prioritize their mental health.
