This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic, energetic, and curious English Language Learners in grades K-2. They reside in the south Bronx, which has one of the highest poverty rates in the country. The families of most of my students have limited to no resources at home to support their educational and academic needs. They are learning English as well as academic content, which is a challenge! They rely on their school to provide that support... All of my students are very excited to be back in school this year and are ready to learn!
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."- Frederick Douglass.
Most of my students struggle with reading and are below grade level in regard to their literacy skills in English. I invite you to assist me with their education!
My Project
As a young learner growing up in Ireland, I enjoyed reading magazines and graphic novels. The pictures really helped me to visualize and understand the story. I have observed my students demonstrate the same enthusiasm in the beautiful pictures and high-interest stories in magazines at their grade level. English Language Leaners learn best with visuals and hands-on activities so this isn’t too surprising!
It can take up to 7 years to fully learn a new language.
English Language Learner students must learn academic content while also in the process of learning content. ENL (English as a New Language) teachers support ELL students in their class and also provide extra support to ELLs at beginner levels in a separate location.
The magazines in this project will be used to teach curriculum and content: ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies to ELL students in a small group in a separate location. Non-fiction and Fictional articles will be read and analyzed with students to learn how to use text features to locate the main idea and key details, to understand problem and solution, and to take action on issues read and write letters. These are just some of the many ways students will use these wonderful magazines. And of course, when we are finished using them in class, all students will take their copy home!
